Brilliance Wasted

Elfrida looked around in dismay as the virus decimated her village. It was all such a waste. If only they’d acknowledged her brilliance and allowed her to receive the scholarship to medical school. She could be well on her way to researching a cure for the disease by now.

But no; all they could ever see was her outstanding beauty. She had the shiniest, bouncy brown curls of any young woman in the village as well as the roundest, reddest nose. Her extremely white skin with the black, red and green smudges around her eyes were stunning.  No one took seriously her studious habits and high I.Q.

Now they were paying the price with their very lives.
